Polio Vaccines: WHO Position Paper – March, 2016

This article, published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record, replaces the 2014 World Health Organization position paper on polio vaccines and summarizes recent developments in the field. The recommendations from the 2014 position paper on the use of polio vaccine, in particular on the addition of at least one dose of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) for countries using exclusively oral polio vaccine (OPV), remain valid. This updated position paper reflects the global switch from trivalent to bivalent OPV in April 2016 and provides guidance on a variety of vaccination regimens with OPV and IPV.
