The Spectrum of Perinatal Group B Streptococcal Disease

This article, published in Vaccine, examines four decades' worth of understanding about group B Streptococcus (GBS) global disease burden. This review highglights, in historical context, the recognition of GBS as a human pathogen, epidemiologic features of the disease, pathogenesis, outcomes, impact of intrapartum antibiotic prophylaxis, development of glycoconjugate vaccines, and appreciation of the global scope of GBS perinatal disease. The author argues that these advances in the GBS field, coupled with an increasing acceptance of immunization during pregnancy, suggest the timing is ideal for introduction of a glycoconjugate GBS vaccine for use during pregnancy.
