Effectiveness of a Live Oral Human Rotavirus Vaccine After Programmatic Introduction in Bangladesh: A Cluster-Randomized Trial
This article, published in PLoS Medicine, evaluated the efficacy of the two-dose human rotavirus vaccine program on the schedule currently recommended by the World Health Organization in a low-resource population in Bangladesh, the first such assessment of the rotavirus vaccine program in a low-resource population in Asia. Results indicated an overall effectiveness of 29 percent against acute rotavirus diarrhea (ARD), and an effectiveness of 41 percent against ARD among those vaccinated. The authors concluded that the rotavirus vaccination program was moderately effective in protecting those vaccinated against ARD. Results did not indicate any indirect protection from rotavirus, and the authors suggested that large-scale, sustained vaccination across a wider population may be required before indirect benefits are seen in low-resource settings.
