Artemisinin Resistance in Plasmodium falciparum Malaria

This study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, compares the efficacies of two treatments--oral artesunate and artesunate followed by mefloquine--for uncomplicated falciparum malaria in Pailin, western Cambodia, and Wang Pha, northwestern Thailand, historically sites of emerging antimalarial-drug resistance. The study concludes that P. falciparum has reduced in vivo susceptibility to artesunate in western Cambodia, as compared with northwestern Thailand, and that containment measures are urgently needed.
