Risk of Epidemic Meningitis in Africa: A Cause for Concern

This article, featured in the World Health Organization's Weekly Epidemiological Record, presents what the potential scenarios were for meningitis epidemics in Africa in the 2007-2008 seasons and provides information on the expected availability of and gaps in vaccine and oily chloramphenicol (used in case management) stockpiles. It also describes what the World Health Organization is doing to resolve the problems and provides general recommendations for improving preparedness and response capacities to enable countries to better deal with a major epidemic wave of meningitis.
