Pneumococcal Vaccines: WHO Position Paper - 2012

This article, published in the Weekly Epidemiological Record, summarizes the World Health Organization's (WHO's) recommendations on pneumococcal vaccines and related issues, including disease surveillance, epidemiology, and studies to evaluate vaccine safety and efficacy. This 2012 update replaces the WHO's 2007 position paper on 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine and incorporates the most recent developments in the field of pneumococcal vaccines, focusing on the currently available 10-valent and 13-valent conjugate vaccines and their introduction and use in national immunization programs. It also deals with the 23-valent polysaccharide vaccine, though in less detail than provided in the WHO's April 2008 position paper, which remains valid. In 2019, WHO issued updated recommendations, replacing this recommendation.
