The Missing Piece: Why Continued Neglect of Pneumonia Threatens the Achievement of Health Goals

This report makes a case that pneumonia, which is currently the leading infectious disease killer in the world by a wide margin, warrants concerted action. It uses 2017 global burden of disease data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation to show pneumonia’s burden of death and disability across the lifecycle, and includes an analysis by Development Initiatives of the relatively low levels of international development assistance allocated to pneumonia between 2007 and 2016. It offers recommendations on the following changes required: control including introduction of pneumonia-fighting vaccines, support, innovate, partner, and champion.
