The Global Initiative on Sharing All Influenza Data (GISAID) promotes the international sharing of all influenza virus sequences, related clinical and epidemiological data associated with human viruses, and geographical as well as species-specific data associated with avian and other animal viruses, to help researchers understand how the viruses evolve, spread, and potentially become pandemics. GISAID encourages meaningful collaboration among researchers to obtain rapid access to influenza virus data and plays an essential role in the sharing of data among the World Health Organization Collaborating Centers and National Influenza Centers for the biannual influenza vaccine virus recommendations. Data is publically available through GISAID's EpiFlu™, an open access database hosted by the Federal Republic of Germany.
